Domino's New Pizza: Is it REALLY new?

Posted by Felicia Wednesday, January 6, 2010, under | 2 comments
Like most American families, we are HUGE pizza fans. It is probably the food we eat the most and we eat just about every kind out there!

I will be honest and say we hadn't had Domino's Pizza in quite some time because of their rising prices and the lack of good coupons. We have found better deals elsewhere. Recently though, I was sent a free large pizza code through Twitter and Domino's wanted me to try it out and let them know what I thought through Twitter. I decided to do a review on my blog as well.

I hadn't even heard about this "new" pizza or that they had been receiving complaints about their old pizza tasting like cardboard. (ouch!)

Before ordering this "new" pizza, I did some research to see exactly what others were saying, since it had been a while. I remember loving the pizza as a kid and the little Domino's mascot, The Noid, was so cool back then!Sitting down with my family eating a large, cheesy, beef or pepperoni topped Domino's pizza and drinking a Crystal Clear Pepsi was a highlight of my childhood. No wonder I am a pizza fanatic now, huh?

So, what went wrong? Well according to the complaints they were receiving, Domino's just didn't "evolve". Their recipe has stayed the same for 50 years and I guess people have found that boring. I myself, never noticed as a child. I do remember, however, in the past few years of buying their pizza that it has become dry. I don't know that I would agree that it tastes like cardboard, but definitely dry.

Check out what others were saying before they tested out their new recipe:

So, is the new pizza really better?

We have ordered the "new" pizza twice now and I actually really like it! I think it is fresher and the crust is so good that I end up eating at least a bite or two before I eat the rest of the slice. The crust has a delicious buttery garlic that is spread over it just as the pizza comes out of the oven. It is my favorite part of the pizza!

While I can't tell a taste in their cheeses, even though I have ordered extra cheese both times, their sauce has a definite spice to it now. There is just a little "bite" to it every now and again which is attributed to the red pepper kick they have added.

On their site this is what they have said to have changed:

-Crust: A garlic seasoned crust with parsley baked to a golden brown
-Sauce: Sweeter, bolder tomato sauce with a medley of herbs and a red
pepper kick
-Cheese: Shredded cheese made with 100% real mozzarella and flavored
with just a hint of provolone

My final say would be that I really did like the "old" pizza, but there is something about this new pizza that makes me want to order it, even without a coupon and THAT is saying something!

So, find yourself a coupon or check out the Dominos.com site for deals in your area and give it a try. I am sure they would love to know what you think!

This review had not been compensated in any way and are all my opinions and thoughts.

Felicia - your picture of The Noid brings back great memories! Glad that you found a way to work it in to your review of the new pizza recipe. Since I work with Domino's, I noticed you described the new sauce as having a bit of a "bite" to it and you're right -- that kick is coming from the added red peppers. In case you're ordering for a family member that isn't a fan of the new spicier sauce, just ask for "hearty marinara" sauce instead when you call to order and they'll make it that way.
